Adding sunshine on a rainy Day

The rain is continuing in England. The skies are grey and gloomy and even my dog, Bailey, is less than enthusiastic about going out for a walk.

Today I have opted for painting vibrantly sunny scenes from warmer climates. Figures in bright clothes walking in bustling market scenes have caught my imagination. I have almost heard the music from drums and witnessed dancing ladies swaying with swirling skirts. I have even managed to include ladies balancing baskets on their heads to larger compositions

In my mind I have been anywhere other than this cool,wet country of mine!

The small face study above was created with W&N Peryelene Maroon,Cadmium Orange and then literally drenched in Cadmium Yellow to one side of the face to draw the head dress into my subject completely.

My studio is full of energy,life and bright colours.

In fact Ihave successfuly chased all rain and gloom from my mind via my brushes!

This has to be one of the best advantages of being an artist.You can go where you like,when you want to and how you wish!

In Love With Colour

There is no doubt about it. My worK is taking on even more of an abstract curve these days. I am passionate about colour and as time passes the quiet whispers of my previous work are being taken over by bold, vibrantly energetic washes and colour combinations.

This was my most exciting experiment recently so I am happy to share it.

Where this adventurous road will lead me in technique I am uncertain of. But I do know I am addicted to working in this medium and cannot wait to explore further. Only by working constantly with pigments and understanding what they can achieve can I gain such dramatic results. Which is why in my workshops colour really is playing a very strong role.

To me being afraid of colour is not a good sign if you want to be a great artist. I am making the most of every touch,brushstroke,colour application and placement in a composition.

Life is about to get even more exciting!

A Host of Daffodils in Watercolour

Already beautiful bunches of sweet scented narcissi are appearing in the florists. They fill my head with amazing perfume that transports me to Spring gardens full of glorious blooms. With joy I held my brush and laid a whispery wash trying to capture their delicate forms. They are so light to touch and this feeling I need to embrace with not only colour but my brushstrokes as well. I am thrilled with this first wash as it has that magic and life I so love trying to achieve.

Very little detail says so much in this small study. I was in love with my subject and it showed.

N.B. I avoid working from photographs as I feel it can sometimes lead to " flat" and lifeless paintings.

Tip: Paint from life as often as possible and learn how to really see a subject each time you do!

This to me is the key to success because when we walk around galleries we are drawn to paintings that seem to speak to us. Those with that extra magic.

Think about the colours you use also......my whispery use of Cadmiun Yellow and Cadmium Orange lends itself to Spring flowers. A little challenge for you.
